The School
At the end of 2006, Norwood School of Ballet officially became Norwood Dance Academy. This change was made to demonstrate the wide range of dance education available at the school.
Norwood School of Ballet had been an important part of the Norwood dance community since it was established in the fall of 1963. Kathleen E. Farmer founded the school to create a supporting and accepting environment where students of all ages could learn and practice the challenging yet rewarding technique of ballet. Jazz, lyrical and tap were added to the curriculum later.
The curriculum is carefully designed so that each student is exposed to the basics of ballet, the foundation upon which most other dance techniques are based. Students may supplement their study of ballet with jazz, lyrical, and tap. Occasionally guest teachers come in to teach modern, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, folk dancing and drama.
Enrollment is limited to keep class size small. Students receive individualized, personal attention from instructors who are careful to develop strong technique, discipline, confidence, and a healthy body image in each student, whether the student is interested in a professional career or recreational enjoyment of dance.
NDA students appear in public performances, competitions, and out-reach programs thoughout the year. The school year culminates in an annual recital in June in which all of the students are invited to participate.
